What Does Your Morning Routine Look Like?
I’ve been called a coffee snob. I accept and own this characterization because I simply LOVE coffee, more specifically my morning cup of java. One cup every day, and I like it strong: two shots of espresso with hot milk. Also, most days I have breakfast with my husband at home. That’s how my day starts, and it makes me happy.
Mornings can make or break your day. There is much research and literature around this. Have a look at these 99U: #labrat: Become a Morning Person and Forbes: How To Make Yourself A Morning Person articles.
Some simple tips around how you can improve your start to the day:
What to do?
If you don’t have a morning routine, create one. Imagine starting your day off by doing a single thing you enjoyed before having to get out and face the grind. What would be that one thing? If you can’t think of one, here are some ideas of habits you can introduce into your morning routine.
- Take the time to eat breakfast (not on the go!)
- Have some extra morning snuggle time with your kids
- Read your Twitter feed
- Have some quiet ‘me’ time
How to do it?
Wake up earlier. One of the easiest ways to get extra time in the morning is by setting up your alarm clock earlier. But make sure you use those extra minutes toward making your morning routine more enjoyable. If you’re thinking there is no way you would give up any sleep or you are a night owl, read on for other suggestions.
Modify your schedule. We sometimes put pressure on ourselves to set up early meetings or arrive at work by a certain time. But if you have some flexibility around this, why not just arrive 15 minutes later or set up your first meeting 30 min later than you normally would if it could alleviate any of the morning rush or pressure you feel.
Prepare the night before. Whether you need to make lunches or finish one last thing for work, try completing it the evening before if you can. For one, it will be one less thought in your mind (and help you sleep better) and two, you will have more time to ease into your morning the next day.
